WHITEBOOK 01 – IT´S A CIRCLE (REGULAR & LIMITED EDITION)

The WHITEBOOK series focuses on documentation and photography in the field of graffiti and train writing. Books from this feature portfolios and essays from the community and showcasing completed projects.

The first book in this series is a kind of diary by the German photographer Mark Grokenberger, who is also a graffiti artist. For this project, he visited the Big Apple, the birthplace of New York Subway-inspired graffiti, ten times. This form of graffiti originated in the early 1970s and has since evolved into a vibrant, progressive, and global subculture over the past 55 years. Many graffiti artists from around the world make a pilgrimage there every year to find inspiration and to be active in the place where it all began, and to participate in something they themselves have been meticulously involved in for many years. Mark has chronicled this process in textual and photographic form, straddling the genres of diary and cultural essay. This narrative transcends the mere account of a German graffiti writer venturing into the expansive New York City underground in pursuit of historical parallels to his own longstanding pursuits. It is a narrative of maturation, creative expression, passion, and niche exploration, a narrative that delves into the mastery of an artistic form as ancient as humanity itself, a creative engagement with public and semi-public spaces from a singular vantage point.

This narrative epitomizes the cultural-historical inquiries that have preoccupied us here at ILOVEGRAFFITI.DE for many years: the trajectory of thousands of graffiti writers, the fate of their creative impulses once they recognize the cyclical nature of their pursuits.

SHOP UPDATE: ‘Füu di Frei’ / A different vision by Blood & Madness

‘Füu di Frei’ (Feeling Free) narrates the story of a group of writers whose connection transcends the ordinary. They share the same goal: to challenge the status quo. Their impulse for breaching barriers knows no limits, and it helps them face extreme situations, such as exploring train depots at -11ºC, going through mental breakdowns, and escaping from trains in motion. Their search for freedom redefines the limits and questions their sense of risk in an environment that demands continuous adaptation and resistance.

In this context, the story reveals its Second Life, a B-side that confronts a judgemental society on those who think differently. It is by hiding their identity that the writers observe the daily routines from a whole new perspective and transform transgression into an act of authenticity that challenges the norm.

‘Adversity means defiance which translates into a deeper meaning of life. Even if it causes pain at times, it is essential that we cultivate hope and trust in our ambitions. Graffiti, more specifically train graffiti, means much more than aesthetics; it is a way of living and a passion that motivates us to achieve our goals, even if they may seem unreachable. It acts not only as an incentive for creativity but also works as a vehicle of resistance and expression day after day, fight after fight. Every intervention on the trains leaves a meaningful mark and symbolises a personal and collective journey in search for recognition and authenticity.’
Mark Madness.

‘Füu di Frei’ represents the beginning of a unique project that combines videography and photography and that turns it into a creative dialogue never seen before. The audience now has the chance to get to the heart of the narrative through an exclusive book, while the short movie is still under construction to offer the best possible quality. This format serves as a prelude that makes it possible to explore the story in depth and appreciate details that enrich the narrative. First, the book; then, the short movie, which will transform the audience’s imagination into a moving reality.

The book is not just a complement, but also a key piece of the project, and it is being launched as a limited edition with exceptional editorial and graphic design by Ana Baenas. Her work, which stands out because of her creativity and attention to detail, shows a level of quality that elevates this publication into a unique collectable object. Every piece is exclusive, turning it into a symbol of this creative adventure. Pre-ordering is now open and gives you the opportunity to claim your copy before it sells out.
Throughout the creation of ‘Füu di Frei’, the author has worked with a series of techniques that break the limits of visual narrative. His inseparable Olympus MJU I has been key to capturing the most meaningful moments of the process, turning the duality of approaches into a rich and multifaceted experience.
This project not only aims to tell a story but also to connect with an audience that knows how to appreciate art, audiovisual narrative and exclusive design. By supporting this project you’ll be part of its production and contributing to something that redefines how multiple formats manage to coexist to tell a story.

New: BLACKBOOK 03 – EKSER

With this third BLACKBOOK, we provide an insight into 15 years of graffiti writing and the work of EKSER. He belongs to a millennial graffiti generation in Stuttgart, Germany.

EKSER has been spraying graffiti for over 20 years and is likely familiar to many of you. His styles and works on trains, highways, and along the railway line, particularly from 2014 and 2015, were especially eye-catching. Since then, EKSER has been spraying much more freely and abstractly, using modified spray cans as a tool, and thus distinguishing himself more and more from classic graffiti writing each year. Therefore, we didn’t take it lightly to compile this book, aiming to summarize such a strong and interesting period of influence in a worthy and representative manner – this long-awaited title includes over 500 carefully selected photos from his private blackbooks never uploaded to the world wide web. Alongside the photos, EKSER shares thoughts in short interview sections combined with guest contributions from graffiti artists like OTIS or XPOME. This BLACKBOOK 03 features one of Germany’s most progressive trainwriters, active since the early 2000´s under several names, mostly known as EKSER since 2012.

NEW BOOK: Repainting Subway Art – Tripl a.k.a Furious

The publication Repainting Subway Art (Tripl a.k.a Furious. Ruyzdael Publishing, Amsterdam, 2024) is the consummation of a tribute to the inventiveness and creativity of the original graffiti writers and photographers of the book Subway Art (Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant. Thames & Hudson, New York, 1984) and the worldwide graffiti movement they inspired for more than 40 years. One gifted Dutch graffiti writer, Tripl, has recreated and reinterpreted Subway Art, paying both homage to, and starting a dialogue with, the creators of the original book and graffiti as a whole.

Exactly 40 years after the publication of Subway Art, the critical, humorous, and respectful release of Repainting Subway Art is a fact. To the deepest layer and smallest detail Repainting Subway Art unveils the dedication, focus and work Tripl put into the reenactment; from painting, to photographing to styling. With 92 pages more than the original book, bringing new words and images of the project, plus an essay and interviews with Martha Cooper and Tripl, the new release gives an in-depth view on the project as a whole and its meaning.

Text has been (re-)written by Dr. Edward Birzin, author of the dissertation Subway Art(fact) (2019), What Do One Million Tags Signify? (2017) and Nov York (2002).

Kill Tha G Word. The Italian Years of P.H.A.S.E. 2

Sale!
Original price was: 79,00 €.Current price is: 69,00 €.

“Kill Tha G Word – The Italian Years of P.H.A.S.E. 2”pays tribute to Phase 2’s relentless battle for the abolition of the term Graffiti, a label imposed by the media in the 1970s on the emerging writing movement, of which he was one of the founding fathers and leading innovators.

The book takes us on a journey following Phase 2’s movements through major Italian cities. From Milan to Bologna, Rimini to Turin, each stop reveals unique works left by the artist on the streets, from his arrival in Italy in 1984 for the Arte di Frontiera event, to his last appearance in 2012.

Through an extensive collection of unpublished material, including photos capturing the essence of that era, along with drawings, graphics, and notes from the artist, we can delve into the creative process and philosophy behind the works that continue to captivate and inspire. This invaluable and precious material has been made available thanks to the contributions of some of the most prominent figures in the Italian Hip Hop scene, who have agreed to share and pass down words and memories of the moments spent together.

Through their testimonies, we will discover how his time in Italy influenced and helped shape the country’s Hip Hop scene. An extraordinary journey where the history of Phase 2 and Italian Hip Hop have merged into a unique, unrepeatable street symphony.
