  • ROGER – Never be late

    25.00

Writing the same name for over 25 years seems to lead into two possible scenarios: writers achieve a kind of individual peak of style and piecing, which is now constantly repeated with minor changes. Or the second, and by far more rare occurring one: writers who continuously work on their never-changing letters, facing the challenge to let their name look new, surprising and vivid with every latest piece.

In NEVER BE LATE, prime example of the latter category ROGER, presents a selection of 55 pieces from 2006 till today. Full color panels in Vienna and hall of fame burners in Berlin, abandoned industrial black-and-white pieces and S-Bahn candy colored quicks or dirty subways combined with perfect traffic shots in bright sunlight: these opposing couples hint the variety of surfaces he uses while at the same time each double page demonstrates the artist’s sheer endless ways of reshaping his name.

The remaining pages show hundreds of name and crew sketchings. Unlike other publications of the last years in which sketches are presented as perfect drafts for later pieces, you can follow ROGER working on ideas which sometimes need several attempts to become final outlines. While the pieces, as painted in public space, are intended to reach a broad audience of spectators, having access to these authentic sketches feels like a clandestine look into an intimate diary of style.

Analyzing ROGER’s scribbles you will find yourself checking the books’ first half again and again for possible executions of his ideas, but also wondering if you might have seen the product in traffic, online or if they have ever been realized at all. Don’t miss the chance to get the first print publication ever by one of Berlins top notch writers!

    75.00

Also Known As is a 190-page, full-color, perfect-bound, graffiti-obsessed, street culture bible. Absolutely every page is pure unadulterated content, without room for advertisements or nonsense.

Each copy of Also Known As Volume 1 is individually numbered and comes with a kiss-cut sticker sheet, two special fold-out posters, vinyl stickers and more. All of this results in the most elegantly filthy graffiti and street culture publication that still maintains as the gold standard for graffiti publications.

  • Graffiti a New York

    24.90

Andrea Nelli was in his twenties when he went to New York for the first time. He saw BIG-O 116, EVIL ERF 14, RAT FINK 131, SUPER KOOL 223 written on the walls. In the beginning he thought of them as strange ideograms but he was even more fascinated to find out that the inscriptions were actually names. He decided to archive this phenomenon by taking pictures and to make it the subject of the thesis for his degree on Literature. He got in touch with many cliques of writers that open him the doors of New York.
Big names, as COCO 144, were his guide. Graffiti a New York by Andrea Nelli is the re-edition of one of first books about Graffiti Writing, published for the first time in 1978.
This book conserves the original text, precious and rare document of an unthinkable research for that period. It contributes to the historical memory of Graffiti Writing with amazing pictures about the styles and the first tags of Manhattan Heights.
More than 100 pictures of Names and historical pieces photographed by Andrea Nelli accompany the text, true in the form and in the content.
Graffiti a New York is a true witness about Graffiti phenomenon in his early years of birth.

  • Rae Martini – 24 Carat Dirt

    35.00

Rae Martini, a prominent figure on the international street scene, comes face to face with painting and artistic expression for the first time in the early 90s. For over twenty years he serves as one of the greatest exemplars of the Italian Graffiti movement. Along with only a few other artists, he has managed to concretize his artistic development. With so much graffiti on streets and trains in so many European cities, he pursued an artistic career dedicated to the world of paint and canvas. Just like railroad tracks, these two parallel domains intertwine and influence each other with the aesthetics and experiences of two worlds, distant, yet close; hardly any artists from the graffiti scene are so committed to their work and beliefs that they are capable of bringing urban setting and street culture into the world of fine art galleries. Over the last two decades, Rae Martini has been able to dedicate himself to these two worlds using a common starting point: sketching on paper.

  • Forms of rockin

    25.90

„The idea of style and competing for the best style is the key to all forms of rockin‘.“ – Style Wars, 1983.

Are subcultures, like graffiti, floating free in their own space, or are they connected to the rest of society? In Forms of Rockin’, graffiti styles for the first time are connected to graphic design and other popular culture expressions such as music, fashion, photography, industrial design and movies. Anssi Arte analyses some of the most powerful visual symbols of the 1970s, 80s and 90s and compares design, display typefaces and graffiti styles. The visual styles of James Brown, Blade Runner, the Memphis group and grunge music all appear together with classic fonts and graffiti writers.
The clear yet analytical narrative and carefully crafted visualizations make it appealing to both graphic design aficionados as well as graffiti enthusiasts. But Forms of Rockin’ is more than that. This is a must for everybody interested in contemporary popular culture and design history.

Forms of Rockin‘ traces and defines the stylistic conventions in graffiti letterforms that have become iconic and globally acknowledged ideals. From the early New York tags to the mid-1990s ugly-fresh styles of Scandinavia, Forms of Rockin’ tells the story of how popular culture and graffiti styles influences each other.

Anssi Arte (b. 1981) is a Helsinki-based graphic designer specialized in visual identities and brand architecture. He has a formal (MA) education in graphic design from the Aalto University of Arts, Design and Architecture.
Besides graphic design he is a graffiti enthusiast since childhood, specialized in studying and practising the traditional European and Scandinavian letterforms and aesthetics.

  • Street Messages

    23.90 15.00

There is plenty of creativity within the international graffiti and street art scene. Writing text messages in public spaces has been a unique art form and a means of communication between humans for over 30,000 years.

Many street artists work only with text, written messages or poems, and not necessarily only with colourful murals, styles, tags and logos. Street Messages is the first publication that delivers a deep insight into this literary form of expression in the world of global street art.
The streets are full of artistic and poetic forms of expression – messages written by graffiti and street artists. Street Messages offers a historic background to written messages in public spaces and introduces more than 80 artists from across the world who work exclusively or partly with text. The vast body of information and numerous exclusive quotes and words of wisdom makes Street Messages the first book to shed some light on this as yet undocumented form of street art culture.
Features artwork by Banksy, Dolk, Ben Eine, Faith 47, Flint…, Kid Acne, Know Hope, Mobstr, Skki and many more.

Nicholas Ganz aka Keinom is a freelance photographer and author from Essen, Germany. He started to paint in the streets in 1994 and has been documenting graffiti and street art ever since. In 2004, he published his first book, Graffiti World, which became a world-wide best-seller and was translated into 11 languages. In 2006, he released Graffiti Women and went on to write several books about Burma/Myanmar.

the first layer of graffiti in Munich

It is 1983 in Munich, the walls are gray and bare, marked only by a few political slogans and the odd declaration of love. Then, suddenly, abstract sign language, peculiar characters and cryptic combinations of letters begin to appear, their meaning a puzzle to all who chance upon them. The pieces begin to spread across the city and mark the start of the graffiti movement in Germany and throughout Europe. The photographic archives of attorney Konrad Kittl and Anthropology academic Peter Kreuzer reveal the first layer of graffiti in Munich: experiments with color and form, unprecedented and free from rules or preconceptions.

  • Like Lipstick Traces

    29.90 19.90

A spectacular photographic journey through the lenses of 13 graffiti artists.
13 graffiti writers, 2 years, 600 unpublished Polaroids.
Like Lipstick Traces shows the everyday life of 13 graffiti writers. Consciously, and therefore in contrast with usual graffiti publications, it uses the peculiar medium of Polaroid.
A Polaroid camera and about one hundred Polaroid photos was sent to well known graffiti writers of different nationalities. The task was to shoot their everyday life with complete freedom in the choice of the motifs. It is that freedom which makes this book so special, but also the fact that all these unpublished photos were taken especially for the book.
In the beginning of the 21st century, graffiti seems to be taking a line which is totally against its original motivation.
On one hand, this might be caused by more severe penalties, on the other it is due to the increasing incorporation of the media and big business. Thus, the artists presented in this book devote themselves to this art in a committed way. They do not succumb to commercial pressure and they bring new life into the graffiti movement.

  • Glorious Attitude FRA32

    35.00

Fra32 is one of the most prolific Italian graffiti writers.
Since the ’90s he has worked throughout Italy as well as abroad establishing himself as a leading figure in the international graffiti scene.
His unique style has contaminated and influenced generations of artists who have found in him a source of inspiration, fundamental and constant as well.
Glorious Attitude brings to light his twenty-year expressive evolution, revealing his obsessive stylistic search, perseverance in painting since he was very young, and persistent production, while he was crossing generations of writers, founding crews, and becoming friends with the most important names of the writing scene.

In this book journalist Chris Gibson draws Fra32’s artistic path, starting from his debut – his first tag in 1994 – and retracing his story until today, describing also Italy’s social and political backdrop of the ’90s.
The book is divided into four sections, each one narrated from a different point of view in order to display the most complete vision possible of the protagonist.
The journalist’s initial inquiry is accompanied by the contributions of about twenty writers who are close to Fra32 and who recount their friendship with the artist, donating a more human and less formal image of him.
The other chapters examine specific themes related to the world of graffiti writing in which texts written by the protagonist himself supplement the photographs.
Fra32 is a black book where the stories and the photographic archive (which includes more than 270 images) intertwine to give the reader a volume where the figure of one of the most international graffiti writers emerges.
