There is a graffiti generation in Germany that set new benchmarks in almost every conceivable respect—both quantitatively and qualitatively, the two central pillars of illegal graffiti writing. While today, due to the sheer number of active participants, it is difficult to single out individual protagonists, this was comparatively easy in the movement’s early phase: the scene was young, manageable, and still in its infancy.

Barely five years earlier, graffiti inspired by New York had, for the first time, left a lasting impression on young people in German cities such as Munich, Dortmund, and Düsseldorf, prompting them to identify with the culture and its social as well as aesthetic context. It was during this period that SHORE from Hamburg—still a minor at the time—began his journey, transitioning from performance-driven BMX freestyle sports to graffiti writing. Over the following eight years, he produced an unprecedented volume of work on trains and walls, whose scope and, above all, quality set new standards.

SHORE is among the few writers who, within a span of just five years, were simultaneously so present across multiple arenas that the scene at times suspected several people must be operating behind the name. In fact, SHORE must be mentioned in the same breath as names such as SERA, SIR, ENRO, DINR, LOR, WHO, or ENT—all pseudonyms used by one and the same person. These names rolled through Hamburg on trains, passed by S-Bahn lines, appeared on silver commuter cars in the Ruhr region, and even surfaced on the New York subway.

Stylistically, SHORE’s work represents a cross-section of Copenhagen, Hamburg, and Dortmund influences. Hallmarks include a pronounced commitment to cleanliness, highly visible and strategically chosen spots, and complex, well-thought-out compositions. Within the scene at t
he time, SHORE was also exceptional in that he often worked alone.

This book is dedicated to the period between 1987 and 1996, during which SHORE1— as part of RTA (Real Transit Artists)—left a lasting mark on his hometown of Hamburg and western Germany, securing a permanent place in the history of European graffiti. Spanning 152 pages, the volume brings together more than 400 original analog photographs from his personal blackbooks and is complemented by guest contributions from SHARK, MOSES, DROW, and several other key figures.
