Martha Cooper has been photographing hip hop culture, graffiti and street art since the 70s and her 1984 Subway Art book with Henry Chalfont sold over half a million copies.
Street artist Mundano’s Pimp My Carroça project mobilized 670 trash collectors from cities around the world, teaming them up with 520 street artists to paint beautiful provocative messages on the carts they use to collect and recycle rubbish, with the aim of giving visibility & dignity to the collectors. It has quickly become a social movement and got Mundano recognized as a TED & Ashoka Fellow.
Martha and Mundano met at the Red Bull Amaphiko academy in Soweto and recognized the connections between their work. They began sharing photographs and ideas, with the resulting collaboration is presented in a unique exhibition for the first time in Europe, in collaboration with TEDxVienna.

Red Bull Amaphiko came to life in the spirit of “giving wings to people and ideas” and is aimed at uplifting and promoting people making a change in their communities. Amaphiko has worked with over 50 social pioneers over the last three years in in-depth, 18 month long programmes aimed at growing and maximising the good they’re doing. Red Bull Amaphiko has also worked with hundreds of young social innovators in Brazil, South Africa, USA and Europe as part of their localised events, and are connecting and celebrating social innovators worldwide. A number of other Red Bull Amaphiko projects are also showcased in this exhibition. There’s the Brazilian dancer using movement to get young disabled people to love their bodies more; there’s the woman using our natural connection to water to reconnect the citizens of São Paulo with the rivers that flow beneath their city; and there’s a young man from Cape Town who is recreating prison life in a shipping container as a way of encouraging the youth to avoid a life of gangsterism.
